MATI MODERN GREEK CUISINE

“Modern Greek” at this newcomer means lamb meatballs, grilled branzino, Greek salad, eggplant plates, and house-made pita, alongside signature cocktails like Fields of Greece, with vodka, ouzo, lemon, honey and lavender.
“Our kitchen celebrates the bold, honest flavors of Greece, reimagined with California’s finest seasonal ingredients,” Mati’s site proclaims. The namesake Greek evil eye lines the walls of the bright, airy space, decorated in cool blue and white.

CREPE O’CLOCK

Eleven years ago, Vassiliki Stratikopoulou and husband Leonidas Georgopoulos decided to leave Greece, emigrating to Evanston with son Peter and, in the process, abandoning a successful café they owned.
Now, a local news site reports, they’ve decided to return to their roots and open this new café, spotlighting crepes. Crepe O’Clock stands out in Evanston with its mix of traditional Greek pastries, including tiropita, and homemade coffee.

YIANNI’S GYROS

John and Amanda Politsopoulos have opened the fourth location of their popular mini-chain, which also includes a food truck. With 1,600 square feet, the newest Yianni’s Gyros will seat about 30, with much of its business coming from third-party deliveries, the owners told a local news site.
Gyros are the specialty here, and Greek cheese balls, stuffed grape leaves, souvlaki, Greek salad, and burgers round out the menu, which also features Loux soft drinks from Greece.

KIPOS TAVERNA

Giorgos Hospitality Group, which owns a string of Greek restaurants in North Carolina, has reopened this casual spot after flooding forced it to shutter last July.
“We didn’t have as much luck with the insurance that we’d like to have,” owner Giorgios Bakatsias told a local news site, “but we’re committed to bringing this restaurant back because it was very important.” On the menu: spreads, salads, soups, and mains including moussaka, youvarlakia, and chicken hilopites.

JASMINE’S FAMILY DINER

Yasmina Dimitracopoulos opened this diner-style restaurant with the help of her mother, Milena, and father, George; Jasmine is the English rendition of her first name.
Along with gyros, spanakopita, and dolmadakia, there are hot pressed sandwiches including the “Eiffel Tower,” with prosciutto, goat cheese, baby arugula and tomato with balsamic glaze. “A lot of the food we serve is what we make at home,” Dimitracopoulos told a local news site.

NICK THE GREEK

This national chain has opened its 10th location in Los Angeles County, owned and operated by franchisee Niko Heliotis.
“As a Greek-American, it’s not easy to replicate the experience of enjoying a gyro while walking the streets of Greece, but Nick the Greek’s menu satisfies,” Heliotis said in a press release. With dozens of locations in development, Nick the Greek is on track to reach 100 restaurants system-wide by mid-2026.
