A coast-to coast glance at some of the industry’s newest additions

Austin, Texas | YAMAS GREEK KITCHEN yamasatx.com
Roxie and Hristos Nikolakos moved from Rhodes to Austin 25 years ago. With their stylish new spot, they’re aiming to bring κέφι to Austin’s burgeoning dining scene. “Yamas is the only authentic Greek restaurant that was up to par with the food from back home,” the couple said in a statement. The menu mashes up traditions, offering both Greek staples and universal favorites like avocado toast and tuna tartare.

Rochester, New York | VOULA’S GREEK SWEETS voulasrochester.com
Voula Katsetos-Garwood has moved her beloved local vegetarian eatery from its compact first home to a larger space with a dedicated parking lot. Along with vegan spanakopita and seitan gyros, the menu features brunch specials like cinnamon-loaf French toast, tofu scramble with feta, and the Mount Olympus plate of sautéed potatoes, spinach, and eggs.

Coral Gables, Florida | MY COUSIN NICK mycousinnick.com
Zeus in sunglasses is the whimsical logo of this South Florida newcomer, “your go-to destination for authentic Greek street food,” its website proclaims. On the menu: gyros, build-your-own bowls, salads, and decadent sides like cheese croquettes with hot honey. The restaurant is the brainchild of Thomas Fotouras, who owns Calista Greek Seafood Taverna around the corner.

Stuart, Florida | NOSTALGIA GREEK TAVERNA nostalgiagreektaverna.com
Take this restaurant’s name literally: it’s the reincarnation of Stuart’s Nostalgia Kouzina, which closed in 2023. Owner Tom Bournas told a local news site that since the new spot’s September opening, “the social media response has been positive. Former customers are happy, and new customers rave about the service, staff and food.” Prices range from $3.95 for soup to $33.95 for paidakia, thin-cut lamb chops.

Hillsborough, New Jersey | RIZES GREEK TAVERNA rizesgreektaverna.com
Drawing on his family history, and a decade of restaurant management experience, Dimitri Manioudakis achieved the dream of opening his own restaurant in November. “Greek cuisine is something everyone loves, and that’s what I always wanted to open since I was little,” said Manioudakis. “Just sharing family recipes, traditional recipes.” The restaurant’s name, ρίζες in Greek, means “roots.”

Three Rivers, California | TONY’S TAVERNA tonystaverna3r.com
After running food truck Tony’s Taverna on Wheels for two years, owners Tony and Maritza Konnaris have opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant in this northern California town. “The result is a stunning, arch-laden space featuring handcrafted details and a world-class culinary team led by Chef Ryan Rusie, Chef Tony Konnaris, and Pastry Chef Phree Corrall,” enthused a local news site. The owners plan to host weddings and events and offer catering services.
