A coast-to coast glance at some of the industry’s newest additions

Chef Yiannis Chatiris, who opened New York’s Skorpios in 2021, is behind this new fine-dining spot in the city’s Financial District. Inspired by the Greek goddess of the moon, “Selene New York brings the festive spirit and generous cuisine of the Greek Islands to life,” according to a press release. Small plates range from octopus crudo, pikilia, and spanakopita; mains include seared scallops, whole branzino, and a souvlaki platter.

The colorful graphics on this new food truck tell the story of owner Evangelos Varonos’s journey from Greece to Florida. On the menu: patatas tyganites, or Greek fries with feta; kalamakia (skewers) with chicken, pork or beef; tylikta pita souvlaki (wraps) filled with meat or veg; Greek coffee; and home- made baklava. Locals Gon Greek is also concocting Greek feasts for private events.

Led by CEO Panagiotis Alexopoulos, this Florida-based franchise opened its first South Caro- lina location in April. “I’m very excited, and in this town especially, we are very, very welcome, and they give us all the support. We are looking forward to having more Gyromanias in South Carolina,” Alexopoulos told a local paper. The chain is known for its gyro platters, lamb chops, moussaka, and spanakopita, and sweets like galaktobouriko and kourabiethes.

With Greek and Mexican fare on the menu, Houston dance club Echoes became Echoes Café in May. According to a local news site, owner Georgeos Kazilas cites his grandmothers as the inspiration for the café’s eclectic menu. “My Greek and Mexican grandmothers, both excellent cooks, raised me on delicious dishes from their respective cuisines,” Kazilas said. “I’ve always wanted to honor their cooking.” Diners can savor spanakopita and souvlaki alongside rib eye tacos at dinner.

Succeeding Grecian Gyros, an Omaha mainstay for 30 years, this new spot will continue the tradition with “Greek and family recipes.” On the menu, that translates as gyros, Greek salad, and baklava, along with burgers, chicken noodle soup, and house-made cinnamon buns. “10/10! Great food!” raved one customer on Facebook.

A popular Greek market stand is expanding to its first stand-alone location. On the menu at Yianni’s Gyros: salads, gyro platters, and desserts baked by Maria Politsopoulos herself, including baklava and ekmek. “It’s what we know, it’s what we grew up on,” said John Politsopoulos, who owns Yianni’s Gyros with wife Amanda and parents Chris and Maria Politsopoulos. The family also operates John’s Diner in nearby Fairview Township, according to a local newspaper.
