It’s the Technology, Stupid!

The end of summer is approaching and ahead is the new school year. So in the spirit of improving our education, this issue has something of a technology theme, understanding that many of us have some learning to do in that department.

Up until recently, attracting customers to our restaurants has been a function of providing good food and superb service, and creating an inviting ambience. In this month’s Estiator, editor Constantine N. Kolitsas argues that all of that takes a back seat if you don’t have a technology infrastructure in place to reach new guests as well as provide them with convenient portals to make reservations or place orders with a swipe of their smartphone. In Kolitsas’ column “Managing for Success,” he argues that in growing numbers, customers expect and demand a baseline of technology accommodations before they consider your restaurant, and he follows up with specific ways to employ technology in our cover story, “Running a Smart Restaurant.”

If the thought of more technology in your life is driving you to drink, check out the latest libation from Dimitrios Zachariadis, Estiator’s resident mixologist and the creative force behind The Cocktail Chemist canned craft cocktails. This month, he’s serving up a delicious Mediterranean Margarita in our Shift Drink column.

If it’s chocolate that brings you to your happy place, Gina Kallitsi has got your fix in “Kakau Worship” in our Greek-language section. For this assignment, she has the unpleasant job of visiting one of Athens’ premiere chocolatiers. Isn’t life terrible?!

And of course, we’ve got the skinny on what’s happening in our industry, from “Industry Briefs” to “Chain Reaction” to “New Arrivals.”

From all of us at Estiator, we wish you a great end to your summer, and an informed, profitable, and successful new “school” year.

Cheers!
