New York, NY — March 2026 — Entrepreneur and former adjunct professor Ilias Katsos delivered the sixth lecture of the 205/250 Lecture Series, Thursday evening at the Stathakion Cultural Center in New York. Titled “The Foundation of 1821: Hellenic and Philhellenic Women in the Making of Greek Independence,” the presentation marked Katsos’ fifth lecture in the series, which takes place weekly every Thursday at 6:30 PM as part of the cultural programming surrounding the Greek Independence celebrations in New York.

In his presentation, Katsos explored the central role women played in sustaining the Greek struggle for independence. From the resistance culture of Souli to the philanthropic movements of Europe and the United States, women formed the essential human and logistical infrastructure that allowed the revolution to survive and ultimately succeed.

The lecture highlighted figures such as Moscho Tzavella, who led Souliote women in armed resistance, as well as naval leaders Laskarina Bouboulina and Domna Visvizi, who financed ships and continued the fight even after personal loss and financial sacrifice. Katsos also emphasized the international advocacy of Manto Mavrogenous, whose efforts helped frame the Greek cause as part of the universal struggle for liberty.

Beyond these well‑known figures, the lecture examined the broader contributions of women across the Greek world, from managing island economies during wartime to defending communities, caring for refugees, and sustaining families throughout years of conflict.

The lecture also addressed the international philhellenic movement that mobilized in support of Greece following events such as the Massacre of Chios and the Exodus of Messolonghi, which galvanized public opinion across Europe and the United States.

The 205/250 Lecture Series continues every Thursday at 6:30 PM at the Stathakion Cultural Center as part of the continuing educational programming associated with the Greek Independence Parade in New York.
