NEW ARRIVALS A coast-to coast glance at some of the industry’s newest additions
San Francisco

MILOS TAVERNA milostavernasf.com
Not to be confused with Estiatorio Milos, the global powerhouse founded by Estiator cover star Costas Spiliadis, this casual spot in San Francisco’s Cow Hollow neighborhood comes from the team behind popular local Mediterranean eatery Milos Meze.
Familiar favorites dominate Milos Taverna’s menu, from tzatziki, acuka, and hitipiti to spanakopita, keftedes, and gigantes pilaki. Cocktails include a mati sour, with vodka, blue Curacao, lime juice, and agave.
Boston

AVRA ESTIATORIO theavragroup.com/avra-boston
Now firmly established in New York, Beverly Hills, Miami and Dallas, this upscale Greek seafood brand has planted a flag in Boston, which is becoming a hotbed of elevated Greek cuisine. A signature is the fish market at the restaurant’s entrance, where guests pick their dinner-to-be and peek into the open kitchen.
“We like Boston, and we think it’s a big fish town,” founder Tsoulos told Boston magazine. The wine list leans Greek, with whites like Assyrtiko and Moschofilero and reds including Xinomavro and Agiorgitiko.
Northvale, New Jersey

THE GYRO PROJECT thegyroproject.com
George Tenedios, whose success with the Gyro Project has been covered in Estiator, has opened its eighth location, this time in Northvale, New Jersey. At about 2,500 square feet, the location seats 50 guests and can handle significant takeout business.
Echoing the menu from The Gyro Project’s flagship, Northvale will offer Greek classics with a modern approach, including gyros, mixed grill platters with rice, hummus, loaded fries, tzatziki, and house-made Greek frozen yogurt.
Cleveland

EVOO evoocleveland.com
While founders Brad Friedlander and Michael DuBois are not Greek, EVOO—short for extra-virgin olive oil, of course—reflects its Greek inspiration by using exclusively Greek olive oil in the kitchen, according to a local website.
The menu will highlight “fresh, healthy, and vibrant cuisine with a refined twist,” its website promises. Miami’s Greek restaurants provided the spark for EVOO, Friedlander told a local site.
Eugene, Oregon

CAFÉ AGORA www.facebook.com/cafeago55/
The mobile Greek eatery, which opened in downtown Eugene about seven years ago, recently launched a second vehicle in a food truck “pod” nearby.
On the tightly edited menu: favorites that travel easily, including dolmas, gyros, kebabs, and fries, along with homemade hummus and falafel. One social-media reviewer crowned it “the best Greek cart in Eugene”
Rancho Mirage, California

MYKONOS mykonosgreekfood.com
This newcomer near Palm Springs is a family affair; the owners are Ali Papis Jr. and wife Ebru, along with father Ali Sr. and mother Siyda.
“The kitchen is positioned around Greek flavors that feel authentic rather than imitated,” enthuses Mykonos’ website. The menu leans classic, with moussaka, gyros, Greek salad, and avgolemono, along with California plates like grilled mahi-mahi and chicken tenders.
